What If?
"What if"?? It used to be said that "if" was the biggest little word in the world. I submit that "what if" is the biggest short prelude to more sentences and excuses in the world as we know it today.
You are told to do something you don't want to do. Trying not to offend someone , the response is what if---?
Then typicaly, you are told why "WHAT if" won't work. This goes on until either nothing gets done or some one is in deep doo-doo.
Your child is told by you to pick up their mess. They respond, "what if"I don't want to? Indeed, what will your response be? "what if " you get to go to bed early and no TV or video game for the rest of the week. Or will it be "what if" I do It for You, then we need to talk about this . "What if" can be a very nasty little phrase, don't you think?
"what if" we don't hire a lawn service this year? we can save money and do it ourselves. Sure you can, but will you?
Now, who is responsible for the answer to "what if"? But you said!!
"WHAT IF" IT RAINS TOMORROW? My garden party will be ruined. If it doesn't rain your garden party will be ruined.If it doesn't rain, there won't be any garden.
" What if" I don't want to be a parent? Well, it is a little bit late for that now. There is no such thing as a little bit pregnant.
So you see, we can take the tiny phrase " WHAT IF" and make it do about anything we want or need it to do.
Sooner or later it always comes back to haunt us.
"WHAT IF " I had just done what needed to be done???
